12/3/2020 Update:

Garden Pediatrics is offering Abbott’s rapid molecular ID NOW Covid-19 testing. It has received emergency use authorization from the FDA. If you have travelled recently, been with family or friends outside of your immediate family or have known exposure, this may be a good test for you. If there are symptoms, we have other testing (BIOFIRE) which tests for a whole panel of common respiratory viruses and bacteria.

Rapid Antibody Testing

While supplies last, Garden Pediatrics is offering Covid-19 rapid immunoglobulin testing for those who would like it.

Rapid immunoglobin testing is in it’s early stages for Covid-19.  You might have heard all the news articles discussing how unavailable tests are, how variable test results are and what types of testing is recommended.  Currently, only one test distributed by Abbot Laboratories is FDA approved.  We are on the waiting list to obtain the device that analyzes the samples.  The technology itself for this type of evaluation is not new.  We commonly do the same type of test to check for Mononucleosis (EBV virus).  However, testing for this particular virus is new.  Given the urgency and the rapid escalation of the panemic, the FDA gave the green light to different companies to market and manufacture their tests despite limited studies.  We have been able to obtain one of those (please see the test documentation that follows).  It evaluates for the presence of IgM (current) and IgG (past) infections.  Due to a high demand, we’re not sure how long we’ll be able to meet the need but are determined to do what we can to expand testing to our patients and community.  The testing is not perfect.  In medical terms, test sensitivity is the ability of a test to correctly identify those with the disease (true positive rate), whereas test specificity is the ability of the test to correctly identify those without the disease (true negative rate).  The test we have has a 100% specificity and a 93% sensitivity rate.  Unfortunately most tests will inherently have flaws wether it be false negative or false positives; however we feel confident that we have selected an acceptable alternative for rapid testing at this time while we await being selected for the FDA-approved tests. Ultimately our goal is to help identify and isolate those who may have been exposed to Covid or unknowingly be infected with the virus in a timely manner to help prevent further spread.

  • Non-GP Patients:
