Garden Pediatrics and COVID-19 Updated as of 3/20/20

In an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19 (the novel/“new” virus in the coronavirus family) while providing the best care to our patients, Garden Pediatrics is changing a few ways in how our office visits run. The health and well-being of our patients and families is important to us. We will continue to provide you with updates as they become available. But for now, here are all the things you need to know.

Before Your Next Visit

The most common symptoms of Covid-19 are fever and cough.  As it is a new virus, over time we will learn more about how it’s exhibited in children but many children may have mild or have no symptoms at all.  Like all viruses, there is no treatment that our clinic (or emergency rooms/urgent care clinics) can provide to speed the healing process.  Even if you think your child may have Covid-19, you probably will not need to visit our clinic.

The primary reasons your child will need a sick-visit appointment in the office are:

  • Any fever (>100.4F) in a baby under 60 days

  • Respiratory distress, including a barking cough, increased work of breathing, or cough that interferes with sleep or play

  • Dehydration signs

  • Sore throat in the absence of cold symptoms

  • Ear pain for more than 2 days in kids older than 2 years old, or in conjunction with fever in kids younger than 2 years old

  • Fever above 100.4 for more than 5 days

 

Along with any viral outbreak, other viruses and bacteria tend to increase their circulation as well. So there is a good chance of increase in other illnesses around the same time that we are seeing an increase in Covid-19. Click here for more info:                                    The types of visits we can do remotely are: triaging for whether your child needs to be seen, lab reviews, medication refills, every other ADHD quarterly (IF medication dosage, blood pressure and weight is stable), behavioral consults, pink eye evaluation, acne follow-ups, coordination of care visits, rash triages. Your doctor or pediatric nurse practitioner will be able to see and speak to you, arrange referrals, send in prescriptions, and provide school notes, all over video chat. 

Garden Pediatrics has separate well and sick entrances. Please make sure you’re only coming into the well side if you are completely well. If you are unsure which side you should entry, please call the front desk from your car and ask for direction.

If you need to see a provider in the clinic, you will follow new clinic visit guidelines outlined below.

At Your Next Visit

We ask that only one parent/guardian accompany the child during the visit. If you have other children, it would be best to leave them with someone at home or have them stay with an adult in the car during the office visit. This will help us to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

When you arrive at our office, please check in and then make sure if other patients are in the waiting room that you remain 6 feet apart from other families. If unable to keep this social distance, you are able to wait outside if the weather is not inclement. If we have an influx of patients who need to be seen and the wait time increases and you can’t maintain a 6-foot perimeter between your family and another, we may instruct you to wait in. your car.

Remove all extra clothing and leave unnecessary bags/toys/other belongings in the car.

We will call or text you when a room is ready and we will have someone come greet you and bring you to your assigned exam room.

Already, we clean all surfaces of exam rooms after each patient visit including door and sink handles. We also mop the floors with disinfectant multiple times per day. Additionally, we have removed all toys, books and magazines.

After your visit is over, your doctor or PNP’s scribe can schedule a follow-up visit while they are in the room with you.

When you are finished, you and your child can walk directly out of the office back to your car. You do not need to stop at the front desk on your way out.

Reassuring Your Child/Teen

There is a lot of uncertainty right now.  Normal routines and schedules are upended.  This can be challenging and stressful for our kids.  Here are some additional resources which hopefully can be helpful to you as you navigate your discussions with them.  Reinforce that they are healthy and strong – that you are healthy and strong, and that all these things people are doing right now are to take care of each other.  And if they do get sick, they are going to be ok. Our office hours are not changing, we will be here during all regularly scheduled clinic hours, including extended evening hours Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays and most Sundays, if you need to be seen in the office. However, we will be shifting to morning well appointments and sick appointments in the afternoon and evening.  It is important to stay up to date with vaccinations during pandemics so patients who need vaccines are highest priority for the well visits.  If you want to reschedule your non-vaccine well visit, we are available to do that for you.
